It's the first question most people ask about an open wardrobe, and it deserves a straight answer rather than a sales pitch.
Dust: yes, you'll see it
Open wardrobes do collect visible ambient dust, particularly on upper shelves and on clothes you rarely touch. The flip side is that they are also easier to access and clean — a shelf you can wipe in one pass tends to stay cleaner than a closed compartment nobody opens.
In practice, homes near main roads or with windows open most of the day notice it more. If that's you, an enclosure is worth considering from the start.
Humidity: airflow helps, but it isn't magic
Singapore is humid year-round, and clothes stored anywhere can develop musty smells if air doesn't move. An open layout allows air to circulate freely around garments, which many people prefer. We won't claim it prevents mould — good habits still matter: dry clothes fully before storing, avoid packing rails tight, and use a dehumidifier or moisture absorber in rooms that stay damp.
